AUGUST TO DECEMBER 2011



Well here I am again hoping to interest you in some tours for the next few months. I had intended giving up the Newsletter as it is quite a task but I do enjoy planning the tours and meeting you all and so here we go again.

TOUR 1
WEDNESDAY 3 AUGUST

A VISIT TO THE SUPREME COURT 
9am (no later)
You may have seen courtroom scenes on TV or in films and now on local TV but the reality can be very different: you may even find it a little tedious as Charles Dickens conveyed in 'Bleak House.' Come along and see for yourself and conclude with chats over coffee at the 14th floor cafe (optional).
MEET: In the foyer of the Supreme Court, Queens Square, 184 Phillip Street.  We need to go through Security.  $22

TOUR 2
THURSDAY 18 AUGUST

A VISIT TO THE GREAT SYNAGOGUE  12 noon
This grand building was designed by Thomas Rowe in 1878 – he also designed Sydney Hospital. Hear about the history of Jewry in Australia and more about the building.
MEET: The Elizabeth Street entrance just down from Park Street and across from Hyde Park.  $22

TOUR 3
TUESDAY 23 AUGUST

A VISIT TO THE SHEPHERD CENTRE  10.30am
Well we are very fortunate to have an invitation to visit this wonderful establishment where hearing impaired children are taught to speak from the very earliest age so they are able to attend school with hearing children.
MEET: 391-401 Abercrombie Street, Darlington.  $22
Coffee at the nearby University Sports
Centre after the visit (optional). $22

TOUR 4
WEDNESDAY-31 AUGUST

A VISIT TO THE OPERA CENTRE
AT SURRY HILLS  10am  
It is here that the sets, props, costumes and even the wigs are made for the Australian Opera productions. A behind the scenes tour and chats over tea and biccies to conclude.
MEET: 480 Elizabeth Street, Surry Hills.  $28

TOUR 5
WEDNESDAY 14 SEPTEMBER

ANOTHER IN THE DELIGHTFUL CONSERVATORIUM HIGH SCHOOL
CONCERT SERIES  1pm
Throughout the year students from different areas of study perform in the Verbruggen Hall during the lunch hour. On this day it will be an ORGAN RECITAL.
MEET In the foyer of the Conservatorium, Macquarie Street, beside the Royal BotanicGardens. $22

TOUR 6
TUESDAY 27 SEPTEMBER

DISCOVERY DAY AT THE CHILDREN’S MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE  
9.45am - 2.30pm (MAUREEN
The building is adjacent to the Children's Hospital at Westmead. We will hear from the scientists about the latest discoveries in medical research and see some of the laboratories. Morning tea and lunch included.
MEET: The C.M.R.I., 214 Hawkesbury Road, Westmead. $30
Fear not there will be no exam.

WEDNESDAY 28 SEPTEMBER

THE CHAMBER MUSIC ENSEMBLE  1pm.

THURSDAY 6 OCTOBER

THE MOUNTED POLICE
AT REDFERN  10.30am
The first body of Mounted Police was formed in 1825. There were no women Officers then but today there are many who work in crowd control, Anzac Day Marches and of course the Royal Easter Show. See the horses & their trainers. A short walk to explore the local area later and maybe a stop for coffee.
MEET: 7 Baptist Street, Redfern (near Cleveland St.) $22

TOUR 9
FRIDAY 14 OCTOBER 

LUNCH AT THE APPRENTICE RESTAURANT
12 noon
At the Sydney Catering College of TAFE the fine meals are designed, cooked and served by the final year catering students. Make up a party.
MEET: Level 7, Building E, 731- 695 Harris St., Ultimo – across from the ABC. $32

TOUR 10
TUESDAY 18 OCTOBER

THE VICTOR CHANG CARDIAC RESEARCH INSTITUTE  10am
10AM The Institute is committed to excellence in research into heart disease and cardiovascular research training. You will have an opportunity to ask questions so come prepared.
Enclosed shoes to be worn.

MEET: In the foyer of the Lowey, Packer Building,
405 Liverpool Street, Darlinghurst. $22

TOUR 11
THURSDAY 27 OCTOBER

EXPLORING SOME CITY STREETS  10am
I like to go what I call 'bunburing' around the city and suburbs searching out interesting areas for walks. Join me to stroll around York and Clarence Streets and be rewarded with coffee at Alliance Francaise Cafe. You may like to try thier delicious croque monsieur for lunch.
MEET: The George Street entrance to the Strand Arcade.  $25 (includes coffee) 



TOUR 12
TUESDAY 1 NOVEMBER

A CRUISE OF PORT HACKING –10.15am
Discover in 3 hours what Bass and Flinders discovered in 3 weeks in 1796. A delightfully relaxed, interesting and informative cruise.
MEET at the public wharf, Tonkin Street, Gunnamatta Bay, just below Cronulla Railway Station. Parking available.
Morning tea included. $30.
Bring your camera. 



TOUR 13

THURSDAY 17 NOVEMBER

WALK THE APPIAN WAY AT BURWOOD 10.30am
I came upon this interesting street by chance some years ago (while bunburing) and was intrigued. An early, stylish attempt at a model suburb and estate with its own recreational reserve.
MEET at the bus shelter cnr. Burwood Road & Hume Highway, near the Royal Sheaf Hotel.  $22.
